Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is one of the most commonly performed facial procedures in the United States. By removing small amounts of excess skin and fat, Dr. Zimbler can transform the eyelid region to look more youthful and refreshed. Dr. Zimbler’s state-of-the-art surgical technique provides patients with natural-looking results that are safe, long-lasting, leave little scarring, and provide the quickest recovery period.

How do I know if blepharoplasty / eyelid surgery is right for me?

Droopy upper eyelid skin and puffy bags under the eyes are often the first signs of aging. As you age, upper eyelid skin begins to lose elasticity and sag, which causes the skin of your eyelid to rest on your eyelashes. Swelling under the eyes and dark circles give the appearance of sleeplessness. Because of family genes, some patients have puffiness of the lower eyelids or a narrowed upper eyelid crease. By removing small amounts of skin, muscle, and fat, a younger eyelid crease can be established, creating a more youthful eye.

Upper eyelid surgery can be performed to help reduce a hooded eyelid. Treating excess loose skin above the eye, upper blepharoplasty can help rejuvenate the eyes and create a more youthful appearance. If you suffer from wrinkles or bags under your eyes, lower blepharoplasty can remove excess skin and improve the look of your eyes. Lower eyelid surgery involves a small incision that is camouflaged in your natural lashline, leaving no visible scarring. Upper and lower blepharoplasty can help remove excess bags or skin around the eye and create more refreshed-looking eyes.

Blepharoplasty / eyelid surgery procedure:

Upper eyelid incisions are camouflaged in the crease of the eyelid and are only visible when the eye is closed. For lower eyelid surgery, there is typically no visible scar, and the surgery is performed behind the eyelid. Finer wrinkles around the eyes can be addressed with laser resurfacing or chemical peels. Blepharoplasty lasts roughly 1 hour and is performed with anesthesia at an accredited outpatient surgical facility. Eyelid surgery is often combined with other procedures, such as a browlift or facelift for a more complete facial rejuvenation. However, eyelid surgery makes a tremendous improvement in one’s appearance and is often performed as a stand-alone procedure.

Blepharoplasty / eyelid surgery recovery time:

Eyelid surgery recovery is quick, and most patients can resume normal activity 1 week after surgery. However, many patients feel well enough to continue normal activity after just a few days. The eyelids are particularly sensitive, and a certain degree of swelling and bruising is to be expected. Because incisions are placed within the eyelid crease, scars are barely visible (typically there are no outer incisions on the lower eyelid). Sutures are removed several days after surgery, and camouflage makeup can be applied 1 week after surgery. Discomfort is mild and easily controlled with oral medication. The application of cold ice packs is extremely comforting after surgery. Compresses should be applied for the first few days after surgery to minimize bruising and swelling. Along with specifically chosen natural supplements prescribed by Dr. Zimbler, compresses will minimize bruising and speed up the recovery process. Healing is completed gradually, well after bruising and swelling have subsided. Showering is permitted 24 hours after surgery, which often increases the patient’s sense of well-being. Light exercise can resume 2 weeks after surgery; however, aerobic walking can resume after the first week. As with any surgical procedure, the healing process is gradual, but the benefits will last for years.

Blepharoplasty / eyelid surgery questions:

  1. Can blepharoplasty change the shape of my eyes?

While excess skin and fat are removed, the shape of the eye stays the same. Only with certain procedures (none of which Dr. Zimbler performs) can the actual shape of the eyelid change or become more slanted. Instead, blepharoplasty rejuvenates your eyes with a fresh, youthful-looking appearance.
  2. If I have the fat removed from my lower eyelids alone, will I have excess skin?

In many cases, removing excess fat from the lower eyelid is all that is required. A skin-pinch can be performed when needed if excess skin remains. Also, laser resurfacing is an excellent method of simultaneously removing fine lines and wrinkles.
  3. I want a natural look after surgery. How can I be assured of not getting a startled look after eyelid surgery?

As with any plastic surgery procedure, it is the skill and judgment of the surgeon that is the most critical. Dr. Zimbler strives for natural-looking results that produce the finest scars with long-lasting results. Any surgical result that appears unnatural or overdone would contrast with Dr. Zimbler’s surgical philosophy.
  4. What eyelid surgery should I have?

The type of eyelid surgery that is right for you depends on what you wish to treat with blepharoplasty. If you want to target under eye bags, lines, and folds, lower eyelid surgery may be right for you. On the other hand, upper blepharoplasty can help you target and treat a hooded eyelid and excess drooping skin above the eye.
  5. Can eyelid surgery fix wrinkles?

Yes, blepharoplasty is one of the most sought-after eye wrinkle treatments currently available. Eyelid surgery helps to tighten and smooth the muscles and skin around the eye. Removing excess skin and fat during blepharoplasty, Dr. Zimbler can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and folds. Lower blepharoplasty can help diminish puffiness or wrinkling under your eye and provide more rejuvenated eyes.
