Teenage Rhinoplasty
Life can be stressful and difficult for young people. In addition to rapid physical and emotional changes, many young people have to deal with bullying or teasing because of their appearance. Unfortunately, this may affect your self-image and self-confidence for years to come. That’s why it’s not surprising that rhinoplasty, or nose surgery, is one of the most requested surgical procedures for adolescents and young adults. As the focal point of the face, the nose has the greatest influence on your overall facial appearance. Whether smoothing a bump, reshaping the tip of the nose, or bringing an overly large nose into balance with the rest of the face, Dr. Zimbler can help shape an attractive and natural-looking nose. Rhinoplasty can be performed once the face and nose is fully developed, usually around the age of 16 for girls, and a year or two later for boys. If you are self-conscious about your nose, you should make an appointment with Dr. Zimbler to discuss whether you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty.
Young people do best when they are well informed and have realistic goals and expectations. Dr. Zimbler will meet with you to discuss the surgery and answer any questions that you may have. Our advanced rhinoplasty computer imaging will even help you to see a realistic image of what your nose will look like after surgery. While Dr. Zimbler will go over the details about your specific surgery with you, in general you can expect that the nose will be splinted for a week, and ice compresses will be used for the first few days to help minimize swelling. Most patients experience only mild discomfort, which is easily controlled with oral pain medication. While bruising and swelling under the eyes usually resolves within the first week, and nasal swelling decreases rapidly during the first few weeks, it’s important to realize that the final shape of the nose may not be seen for several months, when all the swelling is gone. Most patients are usually up and about within the first few days, and light exercise can be resumed after two weeks.
