Blepharoplasty - Eyelid Surgery NY

Blepharoplasty / Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is the most commonly performed facial plastic surgical procedure in the United States (According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons – ASAPS).  Last year in America alone, over 250,000 people underwent cosmetic eyelid surgery.  By removing small amounts of excess skin and fat one can transform the eyelid region to a more youthful and refreshed look.  If you are wondering how eyelid surgery can improve your appearance, you need to know how the surgery is performed and what to expect. Dr Zimbler’s state-of-the-art surgical technique provides patients with natural results that are safe, long lasting, produce the finest scars and provide the quickest recovery period.

How do I know if Blepharoplasty/Eyelid Surgery is right for me?

Droopy upper eyelid skin and puffy bags under the eyes are often the first signs of aging.  Mascara may become increasingly more difficult to apply and excess upper eyelid skin starts to rest on your eyelashes. Swelling under the eyes and dark circles gives the appearance of over tiredness or sleeplessness.  Some patients even at a young age, because of family genes, can have puffiness to the lower eyelids or a narrowed upper eyelid crease.  By removing small amounts of skin, muscle and fat a younger eyelid crease can be established, creating a more youthful eye.  If you are wondering how eyelid surgery can improve your appearance, you need to know how this procedure is performed and what you can expect.

Blepharoplasty/Eyelid Surgery Procedure:

Upper eyelid incisions are camouflaged in the crease of the eyelid and are only visible when the eye is closed.  For lower eyelid surgery, typically there is no visible scar and the surgery is performed behind the eyelid. Finer wrinkles around the eye can be addressed with laser resurfacing or chemical peels during surgery.  The procedure lasts roughly an hour and is performed with sedation anesthesia at an accredited out-patient surgical facility.  Not infrequently eyelid surgery is combined with other procedures, such as a browlift or facelift for a more complete facial rejuvenation.  However eyelid surgery in and of itself makes a tremendous improvement in ones appearance and is often performed as a stand alone procedure.

Blepharoplasty/Eyelid Surgery Recovery Time:

Recovery is quick and most patients are presentable one week after surgery, however many patients are up and about within the first few days. The eyelids are particularly sensitive, and a certain degree of swelling and bruising is to be expected.  Because incisions are placed within the eyelid crease scars are barely visible (typically there are no outer incisions on the lower eyelid).  Sutures are removed several days after surgery and camouflage makeup can be applied at one week. Discomfort is mild and easily controlled with oral medication.  The application of cold ice pads is extremely comforting after surgery and compresses should be applied the first few days to minimize bruising and swelling.  This, along with specifically chosen natural supplements Dr. Zimbler prescribes will minimize bruising and speed up the recovery period. Healing is completed gradually, well after bruising and swelling has subsided.  Showering is permitted 24 hours after surgery which often increases the patient’s sense of well being and return to normal routine.  Light exercise can be started 2 weeks after surgery however aerobic walking can resume after the first week. As with any plastic surgery procedure, the healing process is gradual, but the benefits will last for years.

Blepharoplasty/Eyelid Surgery Questions:

  1. Will the shape of my eye change after surgery?
While excess skin and fat are removed, the shape of the eye stays the same.  Only with certain procedures, none of which Dr. Zimbler performs, can the actual shape of the eyelid change or become more slanted.
  2. If I have the fat alone removed from my lower eyelids wont I have excess skin?
Many times removing excess fat from the lower eyelid is all that is required.  A skin-pinch can be performed when needed if excess skin remains.  Also, laser resurfacing is an excellent method of simultaneously removing fine lines and wrinkles.
  3. I want a natural look after surgery, how can I be assured of not getting a startled look?
As with any plastic surgical procedure, it is the skill and judgment of the surgeon that is the most critical.  Dr. Zimbler strives for natural results that produce the finest scars with long lasting results.  Any surgical result that appears unnatural or overdone would contrast with Dr. Zimbler’s surgical philosophy.
