Ear Shaping / Otoplasty
Ear repositioning or ‘Otoplasty’ is performed to set ears back that protrude or appear too prominent. Subtle changes to ear shape and position can give dramatic results. This procedure can be performed on adults or children as young as six years old. Dr. Zimbler’s extensive training in Plastic Surgery and Ear, Nose and Throat Medicine make him a true expert in otoplasty surgery. If you are considering ear repositioning, you need to know how this surgery is performed and what to expect.
Ear Shaping/Otoplasty Procedure:
In adults the surgery is typically performed with sedation anesthesia or can be performed under pure local anesthesia. Incisions are made behind the ears in the natural crease and the cartilage is reshaped to the desired position. The surgery lasts between 1-2 hours. In children, the procedure is performed with general anesthesia for maximal patient comfort. Children as young as six can undergo ear reshaping as long as the cartilage had matured appropriately.
Ear Shaping/Otoplasty Recovery Time:
Recovery is quick and most patients are presentable a few days after surgery. Because incisions are placed behind the ear, scars are barely visible. A head wrap is worn for the first 24 hours after surgery and a head band is encouraged for the first post-operative week. Sutures are removed within the first week and the head band should be worn at night only for 5 days thereafter. Discomfort is mild and easily controlled with oral medication, although the ears tend to ache and be sensitive for some time after. Light exercise can be started 1 week after surgery however aerobic walking can resume after the first few days.
Ear Shaping/Otoplasty Questions:
- Is the surgery permanent?
In most cases the results from otoplasty will last a lifetime and secondary procedures are not required. In some cases if the ear sustains trauma and a permanent suture is torn mild revisions are required. - I’m afraid of my ears being pinned back too far, can the procedure be reversed?
It is extremely unusual to over correct protruding ears and reversal or revision surgery is very unusual.
