Dysport®
Dysport® is a newly approved, non-surgical treatment designed to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows. How does Dysport® work?
Your face is a dynamic canvas that reflects many moods. Facial muscles contract and tighten to show many expressions: surprise, concern, anger, joy. As we age, the repeated contractions associated with facial expressions can cause deep wrinkles and folds to form. Dysport® injections block nerve signals that cause these facial muscles to contract, leading to a reduction in muscle activity in the treated areas. By temporarily stopping the contraction of these muscles, treatment with Dysport® can smooth the lines between the brows and across the forehead, making you look younger and more refreshed.
How is Dysport® different from BOTOX® Cosmetic?
Although Dysport® and BOTOX® Cosmetic both use a form of botulinum toxin Type A, there are subtle differences in injection techniques, as well as dosage strengths. Additionally, early studies suggest that Dysport® may begin to work more quickly (as early as 1-2 days) than BOTOX® Cosmetic (usually 3-5 days). What can Dysport® treat?
Dysport® injections are FDA-approved to treat moderate to severe glabellar lines (“frown” lines in the forehead) in adult patients between the ages of 18 and 65.
What results can be expected after treatment with Dysport®?
Since Dysport® temporarily relaxes the muscles that cause wrinkles and folds in the forehead, patients can expect to see smoother looking skin in the treated areas, leading to a more youthful and refreshed appearance.
How long do Dysport® results last?
The results from Dysport® injections can be seen within 1 to 2 days and typically last for up to 4 months.
Do Dysport® injections hurt?
Some patients are more susceptible to discomfort than others, but most patients tolerate Dysport® injections very well. Dr. Zimbler may use either an external numbing cream or local injectable anesthetic to minimize any discomfort from Dysport® injections. You will have the opportunity to discuss pain management with Dr. Zimbler before your treatment.
When can I return to my normal activities?
You can return to work and regular activities immediately. There is no downtime with Dysport® treatment.
Who should not use Dysport®?
Patients should not use Dysport® if they:
- Are allergic to Dysport® or any of its ingredients
- Are allergic to cow’s milk protein
- Have had a previous allergic reaction to any other botulinum toxin product
- Have a current skin infection at the injection site
- Have facial irregularities or weakness
While all procedures carry some uncertainty and risk, Dysport® injection is normally a safe procedure when it is performed by a qualified, experienced doctor. Dr. Zimbler will discuss with you all the safety information about Dysport® before treatment, including any side effects that may potentially occur, so that you can decide if Dysport® treatment is right for you.
Is Dysport® FDA-approved?
Yes. Dysport® was approved by the FDA in April 2009 to improve the appearance of moderate to severe lines between the eyebrows. Additionally, Dysport® has been used outside the United States since 1991 for the treatment of movement disorders and muscle spasms.
